DFA's 2008 Dance on Camera Festival & Symposium

DFA's 36th annual Dance On Camera Festival will be held January 2-8,11-13, 18, 2008 at the Walter Reade Theater, Lincoln Center Plaza, 165 West 65th Street, New York City, the Donnell Media Center of The New York Public Library, Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance, Alvin Ailey Studios, and other venues still to be announced. The oldest dance film/video festival in the world, the Dance On Camera Festival has been co-sponsored by the Film Society of Lincoln Center since 1997 and has toured to over 50 venues internationally.

New this year: Image/word event initiated by Kevon "Bulletyme" Simpson, to be held at Nuyorican Poets Cafe. DFA waived its entry fee as a gesture to the dance film community. We have the chance to include live dance on January 11th as part of a program of shorts at the Walter Reade Theatre. We will celebrate the Jury winners with a party sparked by live performances on Sunday, January 13th at the Alvin Ailey Studios. Now that the entry submission deadline is past, we are welcoming your ideas as to what else we should add.
Contact DFA

We present strong synergies of dance and film, whether it be a dance made for the camera, documentary, adaptation of a stage work or site specific creation, or music video. We welcome animation, narratives, and works in which the kinetic energy and rhythmic design comes solely from the editor or lighting designer. The entries can be driven from the prime perspective of dance, martial arts, parcour, cinema, visual arts, or in the case of documentaries, information.

What we offer: Panels, workshops, and this year a crossover with the booking conference APAP (1/11-15, 2008), cash prize for Jury Winner. The filmmakers involved in the tour receive an honorarium for each screening (see touring pages) DFA's Festival receives wide press support, although we cannot guarantee in-depth critiques. The receptions and parties offer a chance to network with filmmakers, distributors, presenters, dancers, composers. DFA's website has a page "Read Reviews/Write your own" to encourage community feedback. All the entries will be posted on-line with their photos and bios.
